QUESTION:
Dear Coach:
I was wondering, how do overspeed workouts work, and do they work? Also, how important is it in training for track and field sprinting?
Thank you,
Martin
ANSWER:
Dear Martin:
Overspeed methods of training, or the correct term, assisted speed methods, can be very helpful if applied at the right time in an athlete's training preparation and in appropriate doses.
The premise lies in the functional application of an increased neuromuscular overload to the athlete, prompting he or she to move at greater speeds than they normally could achieve by conventional means.
The central nervous system and neuromuscular system are thus exposed to an increasing overload that they can adapt to, provided that the stimulus exposure is carried out according to a periodized plan in terms of intensity and volume, and with respect to recuperation and restoration.
Assisted speed can take the form of downhill running, towing, and other assorted methods. However, it is important to remember that assisted speed training is only one modality that can be utilized in the quest for improved speed. Other methods, such as resisted speed training, contrast methods, plyometrics and explosive/starting power development should all be considered in terms of creating an individualized training program for an athlete.
For more information on the subject, please refer to O.P.T.I.'s Speed Development manual which will be available soon. Contact us for the details on this valuable guide.
Other reputable sources for speed development training can be found via M-F catalogue--such as Vern Gambetta's and Steve Odger's speed development video series.
Human Kinetics also has a fine choice of resources, both video and book.
Good luck with your program,
Sincerely,
